A Recreation Lover’s Dream

Wetumpka isn’t known as the “City of Natural Beauty” for nothing. Rivers, creeks, lakes, hills and trails are found in Wetumpka in abundance. Just a few of the faves include Swayback Trail, the Coosa River and nearby Lake Jordan.

Swayback Trail | Jordan’s Journey

Bikers, hikers and trail runners will all appreciate this 12-mile trail system that sits alongside Lake Jordan. Swayback consists of four different marked trail paths which vary greatly in topography. Trail maps are typically available at the trailhead for guests and mark 1-mile, 2.5-mile, 4-mile and 7-mile paths. Each year, the popular Coosa River Challenge Adventure Race is held here, which utilizes Swayback for mountain biking, trail running, orienteering and other challenges.

Close to Swayback is a new trail system, complete with fishing docks on the river! Jordan’s Journey is a recent addition to the area and is already proving to be a much appreciated addition.

Coosa River

The Coosa River, which runs through the center of the town, offers some of the only whitewater around and even has rocks and cliffs that are remnants of an 85 million-year-old impact crater. The Jordan Dam is where kayakers begin their journey down the Coosa. Several whitewater rapids (and a few public parks) make this river an excellent place to learn and hone one’s kayaking skills.

Lake Jordan

This beautiful 6,800-acre lake is the perfect spot for fishing and canoeing. Lake Jordan was created by damming the Coosa River to provide flood control and electrical power, but it has since flourished as a recreational spot. Fishing tournaments are held throughout the year, and two public boat ramps offer access to the water.A
