Ever heard of Jenkins Brick? It all started in this gin in downtown Wetumpka on Opothleohola Street and even involves beehives. In the late 19th century, Michael Jenkins lost his leg in a railroad accident. As a result, he began selling beehives, eventually being the first to sell them overseas to European markets. When the business grew large enough to require a factory building, he found it more economical to produce his own brick. This turned into a bona fide brick production company, purchased over 100 years later by Acme Brick in 2011.
