“The Indestructibles” of World War II

Nicknamed “The Indestructibles” by TIME magazine, the five Crommelin brothers (who were Wetumpkians and all Naval Academy graduates) were known for their heroic efforts in some of World War II’s most famous battles. Sadly, two of them died in action. In the 1980’s, the USS Crommelin was commissioned in their honor and, today, this monument near the Jeannette Barrett Civic Room (as featured on HGTV’s Home Town Takeover Episode 4) stands in memory of the Crommelin brothers.
